Common types of flow meters are primarily classified based on their measurement principles and application scenarios; each type possesses distinct characteristics and is suited to specific media and operating conditions.

Mechanical flow meters represent a more traditional category, encompassing devices such as turbine flow meters, oval gear flow meters, and rotameters. These meters measure flow by utilizing mechanical components that undergo displacement or rotation in response to the movement of the fluid. Characterized by their straightforward construction and relatively low cost, they are suitable for clean, low-viscosity liquids or stable operating environments; however, they tend to be sensitive to impurities within the medium.

Electromagnetic flow meters and ultrasonic flow meters are among the most common types of modern flow measurement equipment. Electromagnetic flow meters operate on the principle of Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction; they are suitable for conductive liquids and are distinguished by their obstruction-free flow path and high accuracy. Ultrasonic flow meters, conversely, calculate flow velocity by measuring the time difference in the propagation of sound waves; they are applicable to a wide range of liquids-as well as certain gases-and offer the advantage of non-contact measurement, facilitating relatively easy installation and maintenance.

Other categories include differential pressure flow meters and mass flow meters. Differential pressure flow meters calculate flow rate by measuring the pressure drop generated as a fluid passes through a throttling device; they represent one of the earliest and most mature types of flow meters utilized in industrial settings. Coriolis mass flow meters, on the other hand, directly measure mass flow; renowned for their high accuracy and robust capabilities, they are widely deployed in applications requiring high-precision metering and commercial trade settlement. As technology continues to advance, intelligent and digital flow meters are increasingly emerging as the mainstream trend in the field.
