Monitor Your Propane Remotely with Smart Tank

Living in a camper for two years taught me a lot about propane management-mostly the hard way. Upgrading to a 38ft Reflection made life better, but the winter that hit the Mid-Atlantic region changed everything. It was the worst in twenty years, with stretches of sub-freezing temperatures that just don't happen there often. My furnace was running constantly, and suddenly a 40lb tank that used to last months was empty in four days.

The wake-up call came when both tanks ran dry in a single week. With temps low enough to freeze lines within hours, I spent a full day scrambling-running electric heaters, driving to three different places just to find propane. Refill stations were overwhelmed. My water heater lines were at risk of bursting. Other campers I knew ended up with ruptured pipes, forced to buy overpriced half-filled 15lb tanks from gas stations in the middle of the night just to get heat back.

That's when I started looking for a better way to monitor propane levels. After some research, I found the Mopeka Pro Sensors and bought two.

Installation and First Impressions

The sensors arrived fast, and setup was straightforward. They attach magnetically to the bottom of the tank-steel tanks only-and pair with the Tank Check app via Bluetooth. No tools, no complicated wiring. You just clean the tank bottom, stick the sensor on, and sync it with your phone.

What struck me immediately was how clean the app experience is. No ads, no unnecessary features bloating the interface. It just does what it says: shows your propane level in real-time, lets you set alerts, and tracks multiple tanks. I ended up buying the LED level meter too, mounting it next to my Compass Connect panel so I could check propane, gray, and black tanks at a glance.

Living with the Sensors

These things became a game changer pretty quickly. Instead of guessing or crawling under the camper to check gauges, I could see exactly where my levels stood. I started cycling between tanks strategically, making sure I never ran out again. During the worst cold snaps, that visibility mattered.

The accuracy impressed me. The ultrasonic readings were reliable enough that I could plan refills with confidence. The sensors track temperature too, which matters more than you'd think-cold propane behaves differently, and seeing the tank temp helped me understand why the furnace was running harder on some nights.

There's a learning curve, though. If your readings seem off, check the placement first. The sensors need to be centered perfectly on the tank bottom. I also discovered that rubber footers or spacers under the propane tanks make a big difference. They prevent rust on the tank bottom and create just enough clearance to protect the sensor from any minor protrusions on the camper tank mounts. Small detail, but it keeps everything working smoothly.

The Bigger Picture

What these sensors really provide is peace of mind. Before, propane management was reactive-you deal with problems after they happen. Now it's proactive. You see the levels dropping, you plan the refill, you never get caught off guard.

For occasional campers, the convenience is nice. For anyone doing long-term stays, especially through winter, it's almost essential. The cost of the sensors is nothing compared to dealing with frozen lines, burst pipes, or the time wasted hunting down propane during a shortage.

I've shown the system to several fellow campers, and the reaction is always the same-they're surprised something this useful exists and works this well. It's one of those products that does exactly what it promises, no gimmicks.

Why It Matters

The technology itself isn't complicated. Ultrasonic sensor, Bluetooth connection, smartphone app. But the implementation is solid. The magnets hold even on rough roads. The battery lasts months. The app stays out of your way. And the data is accurate enough to trust.

For me, the value became clear during that brutal winter. I wasn't the one buying emergency propane at 2 AM or dealing with plumbing repairs. I knew my levels, I planned ahead, and I stayed warm. That's worth more than the price of admission.

If you're on the fence, consider what running out actually costs you-not just the propane, but the time, the stress, and potentially the damage. These sensors solve that problem cleanly. They're not flashy, but they work, and in a world full of overcomplicated smart home gadgets, that's refreshing.
